Field Notes

Clean dashboards can still mislead leaders.

A dashboard can look polished and still be wrong at the business-logic level.

The visible claim

The dashboard says performance is improving. The chart is clean. The trend is clear. Leadership sees confidence.

The hidden defect

The metric may combine unlike segments, use stale definitions, or hide cohort mix. The chart is not lying. The logic underneath is weak.

What to check

Check the metric definition, source data, filters, cohort mix, exclusions, and whether the chart answers a real decision question.

The fix

Rewrite the business question first. Then rebuild the view around the decision, not the available fields.
